[Soren's POV]
Three days since the Challenge, and the smear campaign is already in full swing.
I stand in Silas's private study with Tessa and Sebastian, watching her face as the Enforcer delivers the latest round of poison being spread about her through vampire society.
"They're calling you unstable," Sebastian says, his voice flat but his eyes angry. "Dangerous. They're saying the power display proves you can't control yourself. That you're a threat to everyone around you."
Tessa's jaw tightens, but she nods. "What else?"
"That Silas is using you as a weapon. That House Nyx plans to consolidate power by force." He pauses. "That you're not actually his daughter—that the whole thing is an elaborate fraud."
"Even after I passed the Challenge." Her voice is hollow.
"Especially after you passed." Sebastian moves closer to her, protective. "They're scrambling. Desperate. Which makes them dangerous."
"It's not just rumors," I add, and both of them turn to look at me. "Three houses have contacted Ravencrest directly. Delacroix, Blackwood, and Thornwick."
"What did they want?" Sebastian asks, and there's steel in his voice.
"An alliance against House Nyx." I meet his eyes. "They're calling it 'stabilization efforts.' Claiming Tessa's power display was an act of aggression that threatens the balance of vampire society."
"That's bullshit," Sebastian says flatly.
"I know." I turn my attention to Tessa. "I told them to go to hell. Politely. But they're not going to stop with Ravencrest. They're reaching out to every house they think might be swayed."
Sebastian's expression goes dark. Calculating. "Give me names. Everyone who contacted you. Everyone you suspect is involved."
I rattle off the list—nobles and house representatives, minor players and major threats. Sebastian commits each one to memory with that predatory focus that makes him so dangerous.
"I'll handle it," he says when I finish. Then he looks at Tessa. "You'll be safe here with Soren. I'll be back soon."
He leaves without waiting for acknowledgment. I bow to the King, wait until Tessa leaves the room, and follow her. We stop outside, in the garden, barely talking, barely even breathing.
She moves to the fountain, looking out at the grounds. Her shoulders are tense. Guarded.
"We should talk about it," I say quietly. "The kiss. That morning."
"Should we?" She doesn't turn around. "I don't know what there is to say."
"I shouldn't have done it." The words come easier than I expected. "You were terrified and exhausted, and I used that moment to—to what? Make myself feel better? Confuse you more?"
"Yes." Her voice is soft but firm. "You did."
The truth of it lands like a blow, but I deserve it.
"I'm sorry," I say. "I told myself I was trying to comfort you. Give you confidence. But Sebastian was right—I was being selfish. Trying to feel like I still mattered to you."
She finally turns to face me. "Do you want to matter to me?"
The question is direct. Challenging. Very her.
"Yes," I admit. "But not at your expense. Not if it hurts you or confuses you or makes anything harder. You've been through enough because of me."
Silence stretches between us. I watch her process, see the conflict in her eyes.
"Tell me about Diana," she says abruptly. "The truth."
I wasn't expecting that, but I should have been. She deserves the truth. All of it.
"It was purely political," I say. "From the beginning. She needed Ravencrest's connections to the Elder Council. I needed Shadowmere’s trade routes and military alliances. We were honest about that from the start."
"Were you lovers?"
"No." The answer is immediate. "The blood-binding ceremony was the only physical contact we've had. She has her interests. I have mine. We maintain appearances when necessary and otherwise live completely separate lives."
"So you're miserable," Tessa says. Not a question.
"I got exactly what I thought I wanted." I move closer, stopping when I see her tense. "A powerful political match. Strategic advantage. Everything that vampire society says should matter. And you're right—I'm miserable. Because I had something real, and I destroyed it for something empty."
"You had me, and I wasn't enough." Her voice breaks slightly. "Because I wasn't powerful. Wasn't connected. Wasn't—"
"That's not why," I interrupt. "Tessa, please. Let me explain."
She nods, barely, and I take it as permission to continue.
"I loved you," I say, and the past tense feels wrong but necessary. "Truly. Completely. When we married, it wasn't just politics for me. I wanted to protect you. Build something with you. I thought love would be enough."
"But it wasn't."
"Not in our world." The admission tastes bitter. "Every day, the pressure mounted. My mother, my sister, the other nobles—they all made it clear that sentiment was weakness. That I was failing House Ravencrest by not pursuing stronger alliances. And I—" My voice catches. "I let them convince me they were right. That love wasn't enough without power to back it."
Tessa's eyes are bright with unshed tears.
"I don't expect forgiveness," I continue. "I don't deserve it. But I need you to know—what I feel watching you now, seeing who you've become—it's not jealousy. It's awe. You're magnificent, Tessa. Everything I was too blind to see before."
"Soren—"
"Let me finish." I drop to one knee in front of her, and I watch her eyes widen. "I can't undo what I did. Can't give you back those years. But I can offer you this—House Ravencrest's complete loyalty. My complete loyalty. Not as a husband. Not as someone who expects anything in return. But as a vassal to House Nyx."
"A vassal," she repeats, stunned.
"Yes." I reach for her hand, and she lets me take it. "I pledge Ravencrest's resources, our connections, our strength to support House Nyx. To support you. Whatever you need, whenever you need it, with no expectation of personal reconciliation or forgiveness. Just service. Loyalty. The support I should have given you from the beginning."
Her fingers tremble in mine.
"You'd humiliate yourself like that?" she asks softly. "Pledge your house as vassal to mine? Everyone would know. Everyone would see it as submission."
"Good." I bring her hand to my lips, pressing a kiss to her knuckles. "Let them see it. Let them know that House Ravencrest stands with House Nyx. That anyone who threatens you threatens us."
Something shifts in her expression. The hardness softening into something more complicated. Not forgiveness—not yet, maybe not ever. But understanding. Maybe even the beginning of trust.
"I—" she starts.
Glass shatters.
I see the arrow before I register the sound. Silver tip. Aimed directly at her chest.
My body moves before my mind catches up. I slam into her, twisting us both sideways, my shoulder to the window—
White-hot agony explodes through me.
