Kingsley's POV
A sharp pain shot through me, and I instinctively clutched my chest, collapsing to my knees with my entire body trembling.
My wolf surrendered almost instantly, weakened by the rejection he had received from his mate.
For a moment, I questioned whether I had misheard.
I gazed steadily at Freya, her eyes still icy.
"Oh, no..." I pleaded. "This is not the time for such matters."
Theo had already found a new mate and started a new family, Livia had passed away, and now, Freya was practically alone in the Dark Moon Pack.
I couldn't believe that she would reject me and end our bond at this moment.
Freya merely regarded me coldly. "For me, now is the best time. We've wasted too much time already."
I endured the intense pain, bracing myself to stand up.
I looked at Freya and spoke in a deep voice, "I won't accept your rejection. As long as I refuse to accept it, our bond will persist."
Despite Freya would probably hate me, I didn't want to let her go at this juncture, as if I subconsciously understood that accepting her rejection today would mean losing her, my Luna, forever.
"I don't care," Freya's resolve was as unyielding as ever. "I'll leave you, your pack, and with time, our bond will naturally dissolve. But don't worry, I won't ask for a single penny from you, and tell your mother that there's no need to be concerned about me transferring your assets."
Freya's assertiveness suddenly provoked irritability in me, and my wolf grew even more agitated from the pain.
"Freya, I'll ask you one last time, are you really going to reject me right now?"
"There hasn't been a moment when I've been more certain than this one," Freya replied, her gaze emotionless.
For a moment, it felt as though a piece of my heart was being crushed beneath her feet.
As I watched Freya turn to leave, my wolf urgently yearned to rush out and stop her.
I strode over to her and reached out, pulling her into my arms.
Freya continued to struggle, and then, in a sudden moment, I lowered my head and kissed her on the lips.
She paused for a moment, and as she continued to resist vigorously, I held her firmly, kissing her passionately, as if this were the only way to keep her close to me.
The difference in physical strength between men and women left her unable to resist, and her struggle gradually weakened. My force diminished as my kisses descended, finally landing gently on her neck, where I greedily inhaled her scent.
However, in the next moment, Freya seized the opportunity to push me away forcefully.
There was a loud splat, and my face was slapped.
Freya looked at me coldly, her eyes filled with tears, her hands clenched, and her whole body trembling as she struggled to contain her emotions.
She raised her hand to wipe away a few tears and then turned away resolutely, never looking back at me.
I was left alone, consumed by remorse, with my heart aching and my inner wolf howling in pain.
Lost in thought, I stifled a sigh and headed home.
When I arrived, I suddenly noticed that the bedroom light was on. Immediately after that, I saw Freya's car parked in the yard.
Could it be that Freya hadn't actually left?
Stunned, I sprinted towards the house. Pushing open the door, I was greeted by Sarah. "Alpha Kingsley, you're back?"
I pursed my lips, suppressed my emotions, and whispered, "Is she back?"
"Luna Freya went upstairs and mentioned needing to get some things."
As soon as Sarah's words left her mouth, I rushed upstairs.
For some reason, as I approached the master bedroom, my pace slowed, and I felt a sense of apprehension.
The bedroom door was left ajar, and I could faintly hear the sound of packing from inside as I gently pushed it open.
Freya was crouched at the nightstand, searching for something, and she hadn't heard me enter.
I cleared my throat softly. Freya's back tensed, and she turned her head to look at me. Without waiting for me to say anything, she spoke, "I'll leave as soon as I'm finished packing."
I furrowed my eyebrows, "I'm not trying to let you leave."
Freya said nothing.
She just quickly packed her suitcase and stood up. Seeing that she was about to leave, I rushed to block her way.
Freya shifted her gaze towards me and said, "Are you trying to see if I've taken anything of your family?"
I furrowed my brow and replied, "That's not what I meant. I just want to have a talk to you."
Freya gave me a cold glance. "I don't think we have anything to talk about."
I pursed my lips and, just as Freya was growing impatient to leave, whispered, "I didn't know your bank account was frozen."
"Oh," Freya responded nonchalantly, then chuckled softly. "Does that make you innocent?"
I frowned. "Why do you always misunderstand me? I'm apologizing to you."
Freya sneered, "Is that so? I didn't hear that."
My fists clenched and unclenched, and I whispered, "I'm sorry."
Freya appeared genuinely surprised, then looked up at me with her eyes. "Kingsley, I have a question for you, and I need you to answer me honestly."
I gazed at her in silence.
Freya hesitated for a while before whispering, "Was that you who asked your mom to give me the medicine? Did you know from the beginning that it was hard for me to get pregnant?"
I was momentarily stunned. "You already knew it?"
Freya's expression instantly darkened. "So it was really you?" She shuddered.
I frowned. "But it's okay for me if you can't have children. I never really liked kids in the first place. I think we..."
Snap!
I was bewildered. This was the second time Freya had slapped me.
This time, Freya used all her strength, and I could even feel that her sharp nails left two thin red marks on my face.
I stared at her in shock. Freya's eyes were red, tears welling up, and a clear hint of hatred in her gaze.
Hatred? Why would she hate me?
I thought maybe Freya wanted to leave because she was angry, or even because she didn't love me anymore, but I never thought she hated me.
Why?
Immediately afterward, I heard Freya's voice tremble as she said, "Kingsley, accepting you as my mate is the thing I regret most in my life. From now on, I never want to see you again."
After saying that, Freya gave me a cold look before taking her things and striding away.
I was stunned in place for a while before I chased out the door, but Freya had already driven off in her car.
I returned to the house and saw Sarah.
I called out to her, "You mentioned before that Freya had her friend Novia come over to pick up some of the medicines my mother had given her and then took them to the hospital?"
Sarah nodded. I frowned but didn't say anything.
Why would Freya do that? Why did Freya get so angry when she heard I made my mother give her medicine?
Freya and I had been mated for over a year and had never gotten pregnant.
So earlier, I took Freya for a detailed medical checkup.
The results showed that everything was fine with me, while Freya, due to the damage done to her body during the car accident she had with her mother back then, was told by the doctor that it would be difficult for her to have children.
For a pack, Luna's inability to produce an heir is a very serious matter, especially for me, as the eldest son of the Lycan King. Not having a strong heir would make my cousin Robert and me very passive in the competition to be the future Lycan King.
However, for some reason, after I thought about how, once the news was leaked, Freya might be forced to leave, I chose to keep this to myself.
Aside from me, no one in the entire pack knew that Freya had extreme difficulty getting pregnant, and it's safe to say that not even Freya herself was aware of this.
I simply told my mother that Freya's body needed to be toned.
Then my mother sent over some medicine that she said would be good for Freya's body. I had someone check the medicines at that time, and they were indeed fine, so I acquiesced to this behavior. But now...
Without questioning Sarah further, I made a call to Jeremy. "Jeremy, go check out the store where my mom prescribes Freya's medication and find out if the medicines are okay."
Jeremy's puzzled voice came from the other end of the line, "Didn't we check before? What's wrong?"
I pinched my brow, "Go ahead and check it out; I'm pretty messed up in the head right now. I might need you to be a little busier for a while."
