The Beast's Bride

Chapter 23

Ch. 23 / 30 Nov 10, 2025

Octavia's POV

I stared at Darius, my body going completely still as his words sank in. "Leon declared war." The phrase echoed in my mind like a death knell, impossible and terrifying all at once.

My breath caught in my throat. It didn't make sense. Leon was rash, yes, and desperate in his love for me, but he wasn't a military commander. He had no authority to declare war on anyone. Unless… Unless he had somehow twisted my father's hand, used our childhood bond and intimate history as leverage to convince the king that this alliance had failed. That his daughter was in danger, trapped with a monster who needed to be destroyed for the good of both kingdoms.

The realization hit me like ice water in my veins. This wasn't just Leon's broken heart speaking, this was political maneuvering of the most dangerous kind. For Darius, for our unborn child, for everything we'd been trying to build together.

Darius was already moving, pulling on his clothes with the efficient movements of a man preparing for battle. His hands were steady as he strapped on his boots, buckled his sword belt, transformed himself from the gentle lover who had held me through the night into the warrior prince his people needed.

I sat up in bed, the silk sheets tangling around my legs as I struggled to process what was happening. "Where are you going?"

He didn't pause in his preparations, didn't look back at me as he answered. "To prepare. The kingdom needs us ready for what's coming."

"You don't have to do this," I said, standing quickly and reaching for his arm. "There has to be another way. Negotiations, diplomacy-" But Darius turned to me then, his dark eyes blazing with a determination I'd never seen before. He leaned in and pressed a kiss to my forehead, his lips warm and firm against my skin.

"We won't back down," he said, his voice carrying the weight of absolute conviction. "Not from threats, not from war, not from anyone who thinks they can take what belongs to us."

Then he was gone, leaving me standing alone in our chambers with his words echoing in the sudden silence. The room felt impossibly large without his presence, cold despite the fire still crackling in the hearth. My hands shook slightly as I reached for my morning gown, the heavy fabric slipping through my trembling fingers. The reality of what was happening was beginning to sink in, and with it came a fear unlike anything I'd ever experienced.

Margaret appeared in the doorway as if summoned by my distress, already carrying the items I would need to dress properly. She worked in silence, helping me into my clothes with the gentle efficiency that had become familiar over these past months. The weight of my growing stomach made every movement slow and deliberate, a constant reminder of what I had to lose.

When I was finally dressed, I made my way to the terrace that overlooked the castle's main courtyard. The cold morning air hit my face like a slap, but I didn't flinch away from it. I needed the sharp clarity it brought, needed something to cut through the fog of disbelief that still clouded my thoughts.

Below me, the transformation had already begun. Soldiers gathered in perfect formations, their armor gleaming in the weak sunlight that filtered through the winter clouds. The ring of metal on metal filled the air as swords were sharpened and tested, as shields were inspected for flaws that could prove fatal in combat.

War chants echoed faintly from the training grounds, the rhythmic voices of men preparing their hearts for battle. Supply wagons rolled through the gates, loaded with provisions for a campaign that might last weeks or months. Everything moved with the terrible efficiency of a kingdom preparing to fight for its very survival.

My heart pounded harder with each passing moment, the reality of what Leon had set in motion becoming impossible to deny. This was really happening. War was coming to our doorstep, and Darius would ride out to meet it.

This wasn't supposed to happen. Not like this. When I first arrived at this castle, I'd had vague plans, to fulfill my duty, secure the alliance, somehow find a way to survive in a marriage I didn't want. Even when those plans had begun to change, when I'd started to care for Darius despite myself, I had never imagined anything like this.

Leon's declaration of war wasn't just an attack on Darius's kingdom, it was an assault on everything I'd been trying to build. The fragile trust between my husband and me, the child growing in my womb, the hope that we might actually find happiness together despite the circumstances that had brought us together.

I pressed my hands to my belly, feeling the baby stir restlessly as if sensing my distress. "What have we done?" I whispered to the winter wind. "What have I done?"

Because the truth was inescapable, this war was my fault. Leon wouldn't have come here if not for me, wouldn't have seen Darius as a rival to be eliminated if I hadn't given him reason to hope. My past had collided with my present in the most devastating way possible, and now the man I loved was preparing to risk his life because of choices I'd made before I even knew what love could mean.

The sound of marching feet filled the courtyard below, and I watched as Darius emerged from the castle to address his troops. Even from this distance, I could see the way the soldiers straightened at his approach, the respect and loyalty he commanded without needing to raise his voice.

He was magnificent in his armor, every inch the prince and warrior his people needed him to be. But all I could think about was how he'd looked in the firelight of our makeshift shelter, wounded and vulnerable, trusting me to tend his wounds and keep him safe. Now I was the one sending him into danger, and there was nothing I could do to protect him from the consequences of a war that bore my name in its very foundation.

The baby kicked sharply, as if protesting the tension that gripped my entire body. I closed my eyes and tried to find some measure of calm, some way to be strong for both of us in the face of what was coming. When I opened them again, Darius was looking up at me from the courtyard below. Our eyes met across the distance, and in that moment, I saw everything he was fighting for reflected in his gaze. Not just his kingdom or his crown, but me. Us, the future we were still learning how to build together. I placed my hand over my heart and nodded once, letting him see my faith in him, my love for him, my absolute certainty that whatever came next, we would face it together.

Then he turned away to lead his army into war, and I was left alone with my prayers and the terrible knowledge that everything we held dear now hung in the balance of a conflict that should never have begun.
