The moment Ariaxa’s glowing palms touched Kaedan’s face, the universe seemed to pause.
Light.
Shadow.
Bond.
Love.
Destiny.
Everything trembled on a fragile edge—
Until a scream ripped through the chamber.
“ARIAXA! KAEDAN!”
Riven stumbled through the shattered entrance, armor crushed, sword broken, blood pouring down his arm.
“THEY’RE INSIDE THE PALACE—” he roared. “Rhaelle’s forces breached the north wing—shadow mages everywhere—guards falling—”
He tripped—
Caught himself on the wall—
Gasped for air.
Before Kaedan or Ariaxa could move—
The shadows behind Riven shifted.
Too fast.
Too silent.
Too focused.
A Triarch assassin, cloaked in spell-eaten darkness, launched forward with a blade dripping violet poison—
headed straight for Ariaxa’s heart.
Kaedan screamed, “NO—!”
Ariaxa lifted her hand—
But the shrine’s power held her immobile, still half-suspended, her veins glowing too brightly to react fast enough.
The dagger arced toward her chest—
And missed.
Because Riven moved.
He didn’t hesitate.
Didn’t think.
Didn’t breathe.
He threw himself between the blade and Ariaxa.
The dagger sank into his heart.
Time shattered.
Ariaxa’s scream tore the cavern apart.
“RIVEN!”
The assassin twisted the blade—vicious, purposeful—then reared back to strike again.
He never got the chance.
Ariaxa’s Sun-Eclipse power detonated around her, a blinding sphere of gold-black light that incinerated the assassin instantly. The shadowy body evaporated into ash mid-air.
Kaedan caught Riven before he hit the ground.
“Riven—Riven, look at me—LOOK AT ME—!” Kaedan’s voice cracked with a kind of desperation he’d never shown another living soul.
Blood spilled down Riven’s lips.
He tried to speak—
Coughed—
Then forced out a painful laugh.
“Long… time… since you said… my name… like that…”
Kaedan was shaking.
Actually shaking.
Ariaxa dropped beside them, her glowing form flickering with panic.
“Riven—no—no—stay with us—please—please—” She touched his cheek with hands that burned like starlight. “I can heal you. I can—”
He shook his head weakly.
“No… my queen…”
Her heart broke along every seam.
Kaedan pressed Riven’s head to his chest. “Don’t you dare leave me. Don’t you—”
“We both knew…” Riven whispered, eyes dimming, “…my place wasn’t… beside you.”
Kaedan’s voice cracked. “Riven—”
Riven smiled faintly, turning his head toward Ariaxa.
“…my place… was to protect her.”
Ariaxa sobbed, clutching his hand. “You didn’t have to—”
“Yes,” he breathed. “I did.”
His fingers tightened around hers—
not in pain, but in devotion.
“With my last breath… I choose you, Ariaxa. I choose… the Queen you’ll become.”
Tears streamed down her glowing cheeks.
“And him…” he whispered, looking at Kaedan. “You must save him.”
Kaedan froze, eyes widening with something like terror.
Riven exhaled, shuddering.
“Save him… save the empire… save them all…”
His grip loosened.
His eyes dimmed.
His heartbeat stopped.
Kaedan made a sound Ariaxa had never heard.
A raw, broken, animal sound of loss.
He pulled Riven’s body against him, trembling violently.
Ariaxa pressed her forehead to Riven’s hand, tears dripping onto the stone, glowing gold as they hit the ground.
“Thank you,” she whispered through her sobs. “Thank you for loving us.”
Silence fell heavy as stone.
For a heartbeat.
Two.
And then—
Her grief ignited the shrine.
The ground throbbed beneath them.
The runes on the walls pulsed in frantic patterns.
Cracks raced across the catacomb floor like lightning.
Wind tore through the chamber though no air existed.
Kaedan staggered to his feet, shielding both bodies.
“Ariaxa—what’s happening—?”
The bond blazed between them—
pain
love
grief
destiny
loss
power
need
prophecy
rage
—until it became unbearable.
Ariaxa gasped, clutching her chest as if her heart were ripping open.
Her vision blurred into molten gold and shadow-black.
Her body lifted again—
not gently, but violently.
The shrine responded to her agony with impossible power.
The catacombs trembled as though the world were groaning awake.
Kaedan shouted her name—
But his voice was drowned beneath the sound of—
something ancient evolving.
Something divine unlocking.
Something that demanded a final choice.
The cavern walls split with a deafening crack as the bond surged—
reacting
to her grief
to Riven’s death
to Kaedan’s despair
to destiny itself—
and demanding a final evolution.
