The Wolf-Fiancée

chapter 18

Ch. 18 / 30 Oct 23, 2025

The courthouse steps looked colder in the morning light. Cameras lined the walk like a firing squad. I wore black. Tailored jacket. Sharp lines. Hair pulled back tight. Pain kept me focused.

Elias walked beside me. Navy suit. White shirt. No tie. Tamsin led us through the crowd with her briefcase held like a shield. Inside, the courtroom was packed. I saw pack members in the back rows. Olga near the front. Bryony by the window. Jonah in work clothes. They were here for me.

Alaric sat at the plaintiff's table with his legal team—he looked at me once and smiled, victorious.

Judge Henderson entered. Older woman with gray hair and eyes that had seen every lie twice. She called the court to order.

Alaric's lawyer stood first. He painted me as unstable. Reckless. A mother who put her child at risk. He showed photos of me leaving the lighthouse at odd hours and entering Elias's construction site. He made love look like a conspiracy.

"Ms. Voss violated a sanctioned engagement. She exposed her child to unvetted individuals. She prioritized personal desires over pack stability."

I kept my face neutral and Tamsin made notes.

"The plaintiff calls Katarine Black to the stand."

She walked to the witness box in a burgundy suit. Her hair was perfect, her makeup precise. Alaric's lawyer started gentle. "Ms. Black, please describe your professional relationship with Mr. Thorn."

"I have worked as Alaric Thorn's coven liaison for eight years. Brokering deals between pack and covens."

"Purely professional?"

She paused. "It became more personal about five years ago."

The courtroom stirred. Ice slid through my veins.

"Please elaborate."

"We maintained an intimate relationship throughout his engagement to Ms. Voss." She looked at me. Direct. "He promised me influence. Restoration of Vale keepership of the lighthouse if he secured coastal territory."

My wolf rose but I forced it down.

"He came to me regularly. Even while planning his wedding to you."

Alaric's lawyer looked surprised. This was not his prepared testimony.

"I provided information. Political leverage. Magical consultation." She smiled. "And companionship."

Tamsin stood for cross examination. Her voice came sharp.

"Ms. Black, did Mr. Thorn order the courthouse attack?"

Katarine considered carefully. "He authorized a public incident. Intimidation. He wanted Ms. Voss frightened into compliance. The blade, the attacker, those were his orders."

The courtroom exploded. Judge Henderson used her gavel.

"And the poison?" Tamsin asked.

"My addition. I wanted insurance."

She was admitting to attempted murder while implicating Alaric. Smart. Ruthless. Exactly what I would have done if cornered.

Tamsin presented evidence next. Financial records showing Alaric's payments to Katarine. Witness testimony from Bryony about the blade. Engineering reports from Jonah. Character witnesses about my competence.

"The defense calls Elias Kade."

He stood and walked to the witness box. Every eye followed him. He took the oath.

Tamsin led him through the basics. The Shadowbinding. DNA results. Ward recognition. He explained clearly and without apology.

Alaric's lawyer stood for cross. "Mr. Kade, you were involved with Katarine Black romantically?"

"No. She used magic to make me think I was attracted to her. Unauthorized glamour. When I discovered the manipulation, I ended all contact. I am filing charges with the coven council."

"How long have you known the child?"

"Two months."

"Two months. And you expect this court to believe you are committed?"

Elias leaned forward. "I expect this court to see that I have shown up every single day. I took a blade meant for his mother. I learned magic I do not believe in because he needs it. I am here. I am staying."

He looked at me. Heat moved through my chest.

"I am here for my son. And the woman I love."

Alaric's face went cold. His hand tightened on the table.

"The defense calls Mara Voss."

I stood and walked to the witness box. My heels clicked on marble. I took the oath and faced the courtroom.

Tamsin asked about coercion. Fear. Reasons for secrecy. I told the truth. I had hidden Theo's paternity to protect him. I had accepted Alaric's arrangement because refusal meant more violence. I had tried to keep everyone safe and failed to see I was building a prison.

Alaric's lawyer stood for cross. He came at me from angles. Financial motives. Relationship instability. Questionable judgment.

"Ms. Voss, have you had doubts about Mr. Kade's commitment?"

I paused. Looked at Elias. He held my gaze. Steady. Waiting.

"I have had doubts about whether we are strong enough as a couple against systems designed to separate us," I said. "That is different from doubting his commitment."

"Please explain."

"Three nights ago we had a fight. It scared me. Made me wonder if we could handle pressure. But we talked it through. We learned from it. My doubt is not about him. My doubt was about whether love is enough."

"And your conclusion?"

"The answer is yes. Because we do not just love each other. We choose each other. Daily. Through the hard parts."

I looked at Alaric. He sat perfectly still with rage beneath his surface.

"Mr. Thorn offered me certainty. Stability. Everything on paper. But it would have been a lie. Mr. Kade offers truth. Partnership. Growth. That is what I am choosing."

When I returned to my seat, Elias reached for my hand under the table. I let him take it.

Judge Henderson called for a recess. We moved toward the exit. Alaric intercepted us in the hallway.

"Touching performance," he said. "Very moving."

"Step back," I said.

"I have surprise evidence for the afternoon session. Testimony claiming Ms. Voss orchestrated the courthouse attack herself. To frame me. To gain sympathy."

My blood went cold. "That is a lie."

"Is it? You had motive. Opportunity. I have a witness who will testify under oath that you hired the attacker."

"Who?" Elias demanded.

"You will find out this afternoon. Drop the custody claim. Honor our engagement. I will make this evidence disappear."

"Never," I said.

"Then you will lose everything." He walked away.

Tamsin pulled us into a conference room. "We need to identify his witness. Fast."

Olga burst through the door. "I know who it is. Ryan Moss. You terminated him last year for falsifying safety reports." I remembered. Young. Ambitious. Resentful.

"Alaric paid him," Olga said. "Enough to relocate and enough to lie under oath."

"Can we prove that?" Tamsin asked.

"Working on it. But we have two hours."

My phone buzzed. Unknown number. I opened the message and felt the ground tilt.

The witness isn't lying about everything. You did meet with the attacker three days before the courthouse. Alaric has photos. How will you explain that?

Below the text sat a photo. Me in a parking garage. Standing across from a man in a hood. The angle made it look like a transaction.

I remembered that day. The man had approached me asking for directions. Thirty seconds. Meaningless. Alaric had turned it into evidence of conspiracy. I showed Elias and Tamsin. Their faces went pale.

"He is framing you," Elias said.
