From Luna to Alpha

Chapter 28

Ch. 28 / 30 Nov 14, 2025

Varek's command hangs in the air for one heartbeat. Two.

Then Alpha Ronan's warriors pour into the clearing like water breaking through a dam.

They emerge from the treeline in perfect formation. Hidden. Waiting. Ready for exactly this moment. Ronan planned for Varek's betrayal. Anticipated it. Prepared for it.

The gathering explodes into chaos.

Bodies collide. Claws flash. Teeth snap. The sound is deafening. Snarls and screams blend into something ancient. The rhythm of battle pulses through the air like a living thing.

I move without thinking. Instinct takes over. A hired mercenary lunges at me. I sidestep. My claws find his ribs. He gasps. Falls. I'm already moving to the next threat.

Riven fights beside me. Our movements sync without words. When I dodge left, he covers right. When he strikes high, I go low. We flow together like we've been fighting as one for years instead of weeks.

"Behind you," he growls.

I spin. Block. Counter. Another mercenary drops.

The mate bond thrums between us. Electric. Alive. Every brush of his shoulder against mine sends sparks racing through my body. Even in the middle of death, I feel it. Feel him.

Kira takes down two wolves at once. Her movements are precise. Deadly. Beautiful in their efficiency. She catches my eye across the clearing. Nods once. Then throws herself back into the fight.

Thorne protects our flank. His experience shows in every calculated strike. Every measured step. He doesn't waste energy on unnecessary movements. Just clean kills and decisive action.

My loyalists fight with purpose. With conviction. They know what they're fighting for. Not power. Not territory. Justice. Truth. The right to exist without fear.

Varek's forces are different.

Some fight hard. True believers who bought into his rhetoric about tradition and order. But others hesitate. Their strikes lack commitment. Their eyes dart to the treeline like they're calculating escape routes.

A young mercenary blocks my path. His stance is uncertain. His grip on his weapon is loose.

"Move," I tell him. "You don't have to die for him."

He looks past me to Varek. Then back to me. Fear wars with duty on his face.

"Please," I say. "Just walk away."

He drops his weapon. Runs.

Smart wolf.

More follow. One. Then three. Then a dozen. Varek's carefully constructed army crumbles as wolves realize they're fighting for a cause that was always built on lies.

Alpha Ronan's warriors are relentless. They move like a single organism. Each one protecting the others. Creating openings. Exploiting weaknesses. This is what real pack unity looks like.

An Obsidian Pines wolf I recognize tackles one of my loyalists. I'm there in seconds. My claws rake across his back. He howls. Turns on me with rage in his eyes.

"Traitor," he spits.

"No," I say. "Survivor."

We clash. His strength is impressive but his technique is sloppy. He relies on brute force. I rely on precision. Three moves and he's on the ground. Four and he's unconscious.

I don't kill him. He was my packmate once. Before Varek poisoned everything.

The battle shifts. What started as chaos finds rhythm. Varek's forces retreat toward the center. Surrounded. Outnumbered. Outmatched.

Riven appears at my side. Blood streaks his face but none of it is his. His eyes find mine. The mate bond pulses hot between us.

"You're incredible," he says.

"So are you."

We don't have time for more. Another wave of attackers comes. We meet them together.

My body moves on pure instinct now. Dodge. Strike. Block. Spin. Every movement flows into the next like a dance I've been practicing my whole life. Sweat slicks my skin. My muscles burn. But I don't stop.

Can't stop.

Won't stop until this is finished.

A hired warrior catches my arm. His grip is iron. Before I can break free, Riven is there. His claws find the warrior's throat. The grip releases. I'm free.

"Thank you," I gasp.

"Always."

The word carries weight. Promise. Forever compressed into a single breath.

Around us, the battle reaches its crescendo. Bodies litter the ground. Some still. Some groaning. Some trying to crawl away from the carnage.

Hardik fights with the fury of a wolf half his age. His injuries from the coup don't slow him. If anything, they fuel him. Every strike carries decades of accumulated rage. Every blow lands with the weight of justice denied.

Kira and Thorne work as a unit. She draws enemies in. He finishes them. Efficient. Brutal. Perfect.

My other loyalists prove themselves again and again. These wolves who chose truth over comfort. Who risked everything to stand against tyranny. They fight like they have nothing left to lose.

Because they don't.

This is it. Win or die. No middle ground.

The hired mercenaries break first. They scatter to the treeline. Disappearing into the forest. Unwilling to die for gold when the cause is revealed as hollow.

Then the Obsidian Pines wolves who followed Varek out of fear. They throw down their weapons. Kneel. Surrender.

Only Varek's true believers remain. Maybe twenty wolves. Surrounded by at least a hundred.

The fighting slows. Stops. An eerie silence falls over the clearing.

Bodies everywhere. Blood soaking into winter earth. The metallic scent thick enough to taste.

But we're standing. My loyalists. Ronan's warriors. The allied packs.

We won.

The crowd parts. Wolves step back. Creating a circle in the center of the clearing.

Varek stands there. Alone. His gray fur matted with blood and dirt. His carefully constructed image shattered completely.

I walk forward. My body aches. My wounds throb. But I stand tall. Head high.

Riven starts to follow but I stop him with a look.

"This is mine," I say quietly.

He nods. Understanding. The mate bond thrums with his concern. His fear. His pride.

I cross the blood-soaked ground. Each step deliberate. Measured. Until I stand ten paces from the wolf who destroyed my life.

Varek's eyes meet mine. No arrogance now. No confidence. Just rage. Pure. Undiluted. Desperate.

"You should have stayed hidden," he growls.

"You should have been a better Alpha."

Around us, every wolf watches. Every Alpha. Every witness. This moment will be remembered. Told and retold. The day justice came for Varek.

The day I claimed what was always mine.

"Well?" I ask. "Are you going to fight? Or are you going to run like your mercenaries?"

Varek's answer is a roar that shakes the trees.

He charges.
