Varek charges with everything he has left. Raw fury and desperation combined into pure violence.
I wait. Patient. Watching.
He swings wide. Predictable. His rage makes him sloppy. Makes him telegraph every move before he makes it.
I step aside. His claws find empty air.
The other Alphas form a circle around us. Silent. Reverent. This is ancient law playing out before their eyes. The challenge for leadership. Witnessed by peers. Sacred.
Varek recovers. Comes at me again. His movements are powerful but uncontrolled. He's fighting like a wolf with nothing left to lose.
That makes two of us.
I dodge. Counter. My claws rake across his shoulder. Not deep. Just enough to draw blood. To let him know I can reach him whenever I choose.
He lunges. I sidestep. Drive my elbow into his ribs as he passes. He grunts. Stumbles. Catches himself.
We circle each other. Both breathing hard. Both wounded from the larger battle. Exhausted. Bleeding.
But I'm methodical. Strategic. I've learned to read my opponent.
Varek is strong. Maybe even stronger than me. But strength without strategy is just noise.
He attacks again. A flurry of strikes meant to overwhelm.
I block. Parry. Redirect. Let his momentum work against him. Every wild swing costs him energy. Every overextension creates an opening.
"You should have died in that forest," he growls.
His face twists with rage. He throws himself at me with abandon. No thought. No control. Just fury.
I drop low. Sweep his legs. He crashes to the ground hard enough to knock the air from his lungs.
Before he can recover, I'm on him. My blade finds his throat. Not breaking skin. Just resting there. A promise.
"Any last words?" My voice is cold. Almost mocking.
Varek stares up at me. Blood runs from his mouth. His gray fur is matted with dirt and worse. His eyes are wide with terror.
The fear of a wolf who's finally lost everything.
He's just meat under my blade.
"Please," he whispers. His voice breaks. "Please don't kill me."
Tears mix with the blood on his face. The mighty Varek. The wolf who murdered my mate. Who tortured me. Who ruled through fear and violence.
Crying like a pup.
"I submit!" The words come out as a scream. Desperate. Broken. "I submit! I submit!"
The clearing goes absolutely silent.
Every wolf freezes. Every Alpha stares. The words hang in the air like a death sentence.
Worse than death.
Social annihilation.
Varek just confessed weakness in front of every witness. Every leader. The wolf who took power through violence just begged for mercy.
The ultimate humiliation.
I hold him there for one more moment.
Let them remember.
Then I stand. Remove the blade from his throat. Step back.
"Very well," I say. "I accept your submission."
The crowd erupts.
Not just my loyalists. Wolves from other packs. Even some of Varek's former followers. The cheering is deafening. Howls split the air.
"Arida! Arida! Arida!"
The sound washes over me. Validation. Recognition. Everything I've fought for crystallized in this single moment.
Alpha Ronan steps forward. His voice cuts through the celebration like a blade through flesh.
"Witnessed and acknowledged," he declares. "Varek has submitted publicly. By ancient law, his claim to leadership is forfeit."
Other Alphas voice agreement. One by one.
The judgment is unanimous.
I turn to address the assembled wolves. My voice carries across the gathering grounds.
"I strip Varek of all rank and authority." The words feel powerful. Final. "He is no longer Alpha. He is no longer pack."
Varek is still on the ground. Shaking. The reality of what he's done, what he's lost, written clearly on his face.
"I'm exiling you," I announce. "You'll leave pack lands with nothing. No rank. No followers. No authority. You'll live as an outcast, experiencing the same fate you've condemned others to."
Varek's face crumples. He opens his mouth. Closes it. No words come out.
Alpha Ronan speaks again. "And if he returns or attempts to gather forces against you?"
I meet his eyes. My voice is ice. "Then he'll be hunted as a rogue and killed on sight. Every Alpha here is a witness. If Varek sets foot in claimed territory without permission, he forfeits his life. This mercy is offered once."
The gathered Alphas nod. This is the law. Ancient. Unbreakable. Exiled wolves who break their banishment forfeit their lives.
Two of Ronan's warriors haul Varek to his feet. He doesn't resist. Doesn't fight. Just hangs between them like a broken doll.
They drag him to the edge of the territory. The boundary line between pack lands and the wilderness beyond.
They release him.
Varek stands there for a moment. Swaying. Looking back at the gathered wolves. At everything he's lost.
Then he turns and walks into the forest. Alone. Packless. Nothing.
I watch until he disappears completely. Until the trees swallow him whole.
Good riddance.
I turn back to the assembled wolves. Hundreds of them. My loyalists stand together. Some wounded, some barely standing. But proud and victorious.
Varek's former wolves cluster together. Not sure what comes next.
I address them directly.
"I'm not Varek," I say. "I won't rule through fear. Won't demand blind obedience. But I will demand loyalty." I pause. "Anyone who can give me that is welcome. Anyone who can't should leave now."
A long moment of silence.
Then one wolf steps forward. A male I recognize from the pack. He kneels.
"I accept your leadership, Alpha Arida."
Another follows. Then three more.
One by one, Varek's former wolves kneel. Choose me. Choose truth over the lies they've been fed.
Not all of them. Some slip away into the forest. Following their exiled Alpha into the wilderness.
But most stay.
Most choose a different path.
I look across the clearing. At Riven. At Hardik. At Kira and Thorne and all the wolves who stood with me when standing meant death.
We did it.
We actually did it.
The mate bond thrums. Riven smiles at me across the distance. Pride radiating from him like heat.
I smile back.
This is just the beginning.
