The Lies That Binds

Cracks Beneath the Surface

Ch. 26 / 200 Jun 22, 2025

The morning sun filtered through the blinds as Piper sat at her kitchen table, staring at her phone. The conversation with Jasper the night before lingered like a bruise — tender, raw, and unresolved. He hadn’t given her any clear answers, just more confusion. And the mention of Isabel, with all the implications behind it, gnawed at Piper’s heart like an open wound.

She thought of the way Jasper had stood in her living room, torn between lingering affection for her and whatever connection was growing between him and Isabel. The uncertainty in his voice had been worse than if he’d made a clean break. At least then, she would have known where she stood.

But limbo? Limbo was unbearable.

Piper gritted her teeth and focused on what mattered most: Lily.

She couldn’t afford to let her tangled feelings for Jasper get in the way of what she had to do today. Amanda’s discovery about Noah’s secret trust fund gave them leverage — finally — and Piper had no intention of wasting it.

She was ready to take back control.

Later that morning, Piper and Amanda sat in a private conference room at the courthouse, waiting for the hearing to begin. The room smelled faintly of paper and disinfectant, the air heavy with tension. Piper clenched her hands together in her lap, feeling the weight of everything riding on this moment.

“This is a strong development, Piper,” Amanda said, flipping through a folder of notes. “If we play it right, it’ll shift the judge’s view of Noah’s case.”

Piper nodded, though her heart pounded in her chest. “What if the judge doesn’t care where the money’s coming from?”

“She’ll care,” Amanda said firmly. “Trust me — judges hate manipulation. And if Noah can’t explain those deposits, he’ll have a lot of questions to answer.”

Piper exhaled slowly, trying to calm her nerves.

This has to work.

The door to the conference room opened, and Jasper stepped inside, looking as tense as she felt. He gave Piper a small nod, the kind that conveyed quiet solidarity without words.

“Are you ready?” he asked, standing awkwardly by the table.

“As ready as I’ll ever be,” Piper whispered.

They sat together in uneasy silence, the weight of their unresolved conversation hanging in the air between them. Jasper had agreed to testify on Piper’s behalf, but she still didn’t know where they stood — not with Isabel, not with each other, and certainly not with the future.

Amanda checked her watch, then gathered her files. “Let’s get in there. It’s time.”

The courtroom felt smaller today, as if the walls were closing in. Piper sat at the plaintiff’s table, her hands folded tightly in her lap. Across from her, Noah sat with his lawyer, wearing the same cool, calculated expression that made her blood boil.

Jasper took a seat behind her in the gallery. Just knowing he was there gave her a flicker of comfort, even if their relationship was fractured beyond repair.

The judge entered, and everyone rose. Piper’s pulse pounded in her ears as the hearing began.

Amanda led the charge, presenting the new evidence with a steady, precise rhythm. She outlined the suspicious deposits into Noah’s account, emphasizing that they came from an anonymous trust fund with no clear source or purpose.

“This raises serious concerns about Mr. Greene’s intentions,” Amanda said, her voice ringing through the courtroom. “It calls into question whether his custody petition is truly motivated by love for his daughter — or by outside influence.”

The judge peered over her glasses at Noah’s lawyer. “Do you have an explanation for these deposits?”

Noah’s lawyer cleared his throat, clearly unprepared for the shift in strategy. “We believe these funds were a personal gift, unrelated to the custody case.”

Amanda’s eyebrows lifted. “A gift from whom?”

The lawyer hesitated. “The donor wished to remain anonymous.”

“That’s convenient,” Amanda said dryly. “But this court isn’t in the business of accepting anonymous motives. If Mr. Greene is benefiting from undisclosed financial backing, it casts doubt on his claim that this custody case is purely about his child’s best interests.”

The judge leaned forward slightly. “Mr. Greene, do you have anything to say for yourself?”

Noah shifted in his seat, his carefully maintained composure slipping for just a moment. Piper recognized the flicker of frustration in his expression — a crack in the armor he’d worked so hard to maintain.

“I love my daughter,” Noah said, his voice measured. “That’s why I’m here.”

Piper felt a bitter laugh rise in her throat.

If you really loved her, you wouldn’t be trying to tear her away from me.

Amanda didn’t give Noah a chance to regain control. She called Jasper to the stand.

Piper held her breath as Jasper took the oath and sat down, his storm-gray eyes flickering briefly toward her before settling on the judge.

“Mr. Hawthorne,” Amanda began, “you’ve been a significant presence in Lily’s life. Can you tell the court how you feel about her being caught in the middle of this custody battle?”

Jasper cleared his throat, sitting up straighter. “It’s been hard — for all of us,” he admitted. “Lily deserves stability, and right now... I’m not convinced that Noah can provide that.”

Amanda nodded, her expression encouraging. “Can you elaborate on why you feel that way?”

Jasper hesitated for a moment, then spoke carefully. “Noah has shown up out of nowhere, claiming he wants to be part of Lily’s life. But I’ve watched him manipulate situations to suit his needs before. And now, with these anonymous funds... It feels more like a power play than genuine love.”

Piper’s heart swelled with gratitude — and something deeper, something dangerous — at Jasper’s words.

He’s still on my side. He still sees the truth.

The judge listened carefully, her expression thoughtful but guarded.

Amanda pressed on. “Do you believe that the child’s best interests would be served by remaining with Ms. Blackwood?”

Jasper didn’t hesitate. “Yes,” he said firmly. “Piper has been there for Lily every step of the way. She’s the most consistent and loving presence in Lily’s life.”

Piper blinked back tears, overwhelmed by the quiet sincerity in Jasper’s voice.

The hearing concluded with closing statements from both sides. As the judge retreated to her chambers to deliberate, Piper sat frozen at the plaintiff’s table, her heart hammering in her chest.

Jasper returned to the gallery and took a seat beside her, his shoulder brushing against hers.

“You did great,” he whispered, his voice low and reassuring.

Piper gave him a shaky smile. “Thank you. For everything.”

They sat in silence, waiting for the judge’s decision. Piper tried to steady her breathing, but the tension in the room was unbearable.

When the judge finally returned, the room fell deathly silent.

“After reviewing the evidence and testimony,” the judge began, her voice calm and deliberate, “I find that the introduction of undisclosed financial support raises valid concerns regarding Mr. Greene’s custody petition.”

Piper’s heart leapt in her chest.

“Therefore,” the judge continued, “I am reversing the temporary custody order. Effective immediately, primary custody will be returned to Ms. Blackwood, with appropriate visitation rights granted to Mr. Greene.”

The words hit Piper like a tidal wave, and she struggled to contain the sob of relief rising in her throat. She had won.

Lily was coming home.

As the courtroom emptied, Piper turned to Jasper, tears streaming down her face. “We did it,” she whispered.

Jasper smiled — a rare, genuine smile that made her heart ache with the memory of the man she used to know. “Yeah,” he said softly. “We did.”

And for a moment — just a moment — everything felt right again.

But deep down, Piper knew the battle wasn’t truly over. Not yet. There were still questions left unanswered, still wounds that needed healing.

And somewhere in the shadows of her mind, Isabel’s presence lingered — a reminder that some battles were far from simple.

But for now, Piper allowed herself to breathe, to hold on to this small victory, and to hope. Because Lily was coming home. And that was all that mattered.
