Mason narrates:
We've been on the road for a month now, admittedly these days have been perfect. I haven't thought about anything other than what's going to happen to the relationship we're forming with Paige.
We are still having breakfast in Paris; we have not moved from here at Paige's request. I'm happy to oblige her wishes, all her wishes.
I have made a decision about what will happen when we leave home, which is that I love her, and I want to be with her. I will talk to Peyton when I return and explain to her that even though I feel indebted to her for all the time she has had to wait I cannot be.
with her without loving her. With how well she took the news of the time she needed I think she has also been in doubt about how she felt about me.
I am determined to continue with Paige to be happy with her, it is the best I can do. I can't live a charade with Peyton, I will only make us both suffer. Me because I don't love her and her because she will be with someone who doesn't love her.
We only have two weeks left, but unfortunately, I receive a call from the company asking me to come back urgently, so I have called Paige at the hotel restaurant to talk about it.
I see her coming smiling and I sigh in love with her.
"Good morning, you look beautiful today," I say nervously.
"Good morning, thank you," she says.
"I have a problem, I was called from the office, and I have to go back for an emergency," I tell her, and her smile fades.
"Oh, I see. Then we have something to talk about," she says nervously.
"Yes, that's why I invited you here. I've thought a lot about it. I want to be with you. The truth is, I love you and I can't imagine my life without you. What I feel for you is greater than anything I've ever felt for anyone else. I don't expect you to feel the same way, but I can make you fall in love with me if you give me the chance to show you that I can make you happy," I say, taking her hand.
"You don't have to do anything, I feel the same way about you," she says, blushing.
I don't know how or how long it takes for me to get up and hug her, lifting her from her seat. I feel so happy about what she said. I just reacted with excitement.
"I will talk to Peyton and make everything clear with her," I say, kissing her cheeks.
"Okay, I trust you," she says.
I truly am the happiest man in the universe.
Peyton narrates:
I get a text from Mason telling me he's coming back early on work business, and we need to talk. I know from the way he's texting me that he's going to tell me something I don't want to hear. I pace around like a caged lion in the apartment anxious to meet him.
What he can't imagine is the surprise I have prepared for him, when I tell him everything that has happened lately, he will ask me to marry him as soon as he finishes with his little wife he has now.
Nobody messes with me and leaves me when he wants to, I am the one who always leaves men, and this time will be no different. This month that I've been alone I've taken advantage of leaving everything in order for the day Mason came back, today is the day. I smile at my reflection as I get ready and reply.
"Okay, when you get here come see me, we have something important to talk about."
That's all I tell him and put the cell phone on silent. I tidy up the apartment making time for Mason to arrive. I find myself anxious to see his face when I tell him what I have to tell him.
Hours pass and Mason calls me to tell me he's on his way, that he just landed.
I prepare the surprise I have for him and sit down to wait. He has keys so he will come in when he arrives.
He doesn't take long to appear in front of me.
I smile at him and point to the chair in front of me. He sits down and says,
"I truly apologize for coming to tell you this," but I don't let him finish.
"We need to talk about something important. Before you tell me what you came to say, I would like to give you something," I say nervously.
"Give me something?" he asks, confused.
"Yes, but don't open it until you've said what you need to say," I say, smiling.
"Alright," I hand him the envelope and he place it on the table. "I have fallen in love. It's not something I planned, you know that I loved you, but this time with her made me realize that what I feel for her is much stronger than what I feel or, should I say, felt for you. I apologize for the sincerity and cruelty of my words, but you know I've always been honest with you," he says, and I pretend to cry.
"I don't know what to say. I imagined all of this differently," I say, trembling.
"What do you mean by 'all of this'?"
"You can open the envelope now, but before you do, I want you to know that it's not necessary for you to take any action. I can leave the country and you won't hear from me again," I say, wiping fake tears.
I watch him open the envelope in silence. He takes out the paper and begins to read. His expression is worth all the time I remained silent. He feels very guilty for what he said when he sees what I gave him.
After reading the paper, he takes out the photograph and some knitted mittens that I had made.
"I made them myself, as I told you. You don't have to be a part of our lives, just forget that I will have your child, and we can each go on with our lives."
"Are you pregnant?" he asks, unable to believe what I'm saying.
"I found out a few days ago because of some discomfort I was feeling. I didn't want to tell you anything until you returned, but since you no longer love me, I don't want you to be with me out of obligation. I will find a way to move forward with my baby, and you can continue your life with your wife," I say, looking at the ground to hide my smile.
"This can't be happening..."
