WHAT’S BEST FOR THE ONE I LOVE
“You must eat lunch on time,” Kai beamed at me as he lifted the spoon near my face.
I opened my mouth and ate what was on the spoon. I chewed the food before replying, “I had a lot of new applicants to interview.”
He narrowed his eyes on me. I could see his jaw clenching as he looked at me. “Even so…” he muttered as he fed me another. “Damn. I should’ve asked Serena to bring you food for lunch.”
I chewed the food and stared at him. Right now, I feel like it is four years over and over again. He’s here, feeding me lunch, telling me not to skip meals for anything, taking care of me so well. I could remember every minute we spent doing these same things years ago. And the feeling is so good—so good that I could actually love time to stop.
“It’s fine. My members could do that for me,” I told him and smiled, assuring him that I’m fine.
Because I really am fine.
I have skipped a lot of meals when I was away and nothing bad happened to me. I don’t think it would make any difference now.
He let out a deep breath before reaching for my cheek. “I could do that for you, too. You don’t need others. You only need me,” he said in a possessive and authoritative voice.
I could help but smile. “Okay,” I surrendered because I know I couldn’t escape.
There’s something about his words that makes me submit to him as a whole, without doubts, without questions. I am certainly aware that this is the downside of loving him but I could care less about anything right now. The fact that we’re together, again, is the main force that keeps me going.
I went back to the office even with Serena looking at me suspiciously. I couldn’t blame her or anyone. Everyone knows that Kai is with Rachel Grey. He being with me is an untold story.
Heina was panicking when I arrived in the office. She’s biting her lip as she paces back and forth from her desk to Jason’s desk.
I narrowed my eyes at her. “What’s wrong?” I asked as I stepped to him.
She looked at me with worried eyes. “Someone is fabricating rumors about the CEO kissing a woman at a resort,” she replied as she bit her nails panicking.
My heart constricted the moment I heard her words. Did someone see Kai and I at the resort? Now, I’m nervous…did that someone recognize who he was with?
“It was an investor, Miss Eunique. Everyone’s freaking out. The stocks of the company are falling by the minute. Three of our major investors have pulled out their shares in the company!” Heina continued. “And the launching of the new branch seems to be at stake as well.”
I pursed my lips in a thin line. My mind is blank. I don’t know what to do. Damn it! I am the HR head! I should know what to do! I should initiate the first move.
“Miss Eunique, we need to stop the rumors,” Heina said.
I know. I know that. But how? How can I stop the rumors when I know that the rumors are true?
“Bring me the person who saw the said incident,” I told Heina.
She looked at me, surprised at my authoritative tone.
I narrowed my eyes at her. “Is he identified?” I asked. “Are the rumors true? Or does anybody just want to bring the company down?”
Heina pursed her lips in a thin line. “He’s not yet identified, Miss Eunique,” she replied. “But the boys are trying their best to know the person behind all these.”
I nodded and motioned to walk to my desk. “Then we need to bring those investors back. Or better yet, find new ones,” I spoke as I opened a folder of the coming applicants.
I heard Heina sigh. “I wonder if Mr. Bennett is cheating on Miss Rachel Grey,” she mumbled as she walked to her desk and resumed with her work.
I bit my lip and pretended not to hear anything. What is this feeling? I’m so guilty of what’s happening to the company.
I immediately took my phone and texted Kaisser Bennett.
To: Kaisser Bennett
I’m sorry.
I don’t know why I apologized but I think I needed to. I needed to at least release some of the guilt in me. One way would be apologizing.
I couldn’t help but blame myself. I don’t even know if this is right. Should I really blame myself?
My phone immediately rang after a few minutes.
Kaisser Bennett calling…
I stood up and went inside the interview room so no one could hear my conversation with him.
I gulped and took a deep breath before accepting the call.
“Hey, it’s alright. You don’t need to apologize.” His voice was so soft and comforting but I couldn’t find relief.
Their business is slowly falling apart. And it’s partly because of me.
“Are you alright?” I asked, trembling, guilty and all the other emotions combined.
I heard his faint chuckle from the other line. He might not show it but I know that it’s hard. Hell, it’s really hard for him.
“I’m fine as long as you’re with me,” he said and I can hear his sincerity. But I still couldn’t keep calm. I don’t know how I can overcome feeling guilty about this.
I shut my eyes and lifted my eyes. I don’t know what to do. I want to help but I don’t know where to start. Or maybe I do…I just refuse to see it as an option.
I’ve never loved anyone as much as I’ve loved Kaisser Bennett. I even think that I must have loved him more than I have ever loved myself. I came back to the United Kingdom hoping to have him back once again and it wasn’t easy for me.
Being with him is all I’ve ever wanted. Staying with him is all I’ve ever dreamed of. But is it all worth it? Am I worth everything he’s worked for? Am I worth everything his family has been putting up? Am I worth their business?
“You’re thinking deeply.”
I was shocked to see Juneau smiling down at me. I sat properly.
“Hi,” I tried to smile genuinely.
He sat in front of me and I could feel the people’s eyes in the whole cafeteria looking at us. All of them must be wondering why the brother of the CEO is talking to me.
“What’s up?” he asked as he crossed his arms on the table.
I smiled and shrugged. “I’m good. How about you?” I asked him.
He smiled. “I’m fine now,” he replied.
I stared at him and tried to read what he’s thinking. He’s always showing a happy face but is he really happy? I’m pretty sure that it’s not easy being an illegitimate son. He must be going through a lot but how can he still show a smiling face?
“Hey, we owe each other lunch, right?” he asked, trying to open another set of conversation.
I smiled and nodded. “Yes. When are you going to treat me lunch?” I tried to joke.
He smiled and cocked his head. “Now?” he replied, unsure and a bit hopeful. “Are you with your members?” he asked.
I shook my head. I’m not really hungry because of everything in my mind but I think I could use some company to chill out.
“Great!” He clasped his fingers. “What do you want to eat?” he asked.
I smiled and let him decide. After all, he’s the one who’s going to buy me food.
He happily wandered to the stalls and bought a lot. I can see him from here. He bought a lot of food.
I almost smiled at myself while watching him buy the food. Juneau is a good and a jolly man. I couldn’t help but think about the hardships he had gone through. He must have been through a lot of criticisms. And hell, accepting that he’s an illegitimate child is even hard enough.
When Juneau thought he bought enough, which is still a lot, he came back on our table. He placed the tray in front of me carrying a lot of food.
“Why did you buy a lot?” I asked him.
He just smiled and sat across me again. “Aren’t you hungry? I am,” he replied as he took one chicken drumstick and ate the whole thing.
I stared at him and blinked. He looks nothing like Kai. He’s on a different level of handsome. A fairy-like level, I think. He’s the type of a guy who you’d think would take care of you and is incapable of making you cry.
I watched him eat the food he bought. Of course, I started eating too, but watching him is fascinating. He looks like a kid who hadn’t eaten for a whole year.
When he noticed me just staring at him, he stopped and looked up to me. “Is there something wrong with my face?” he asked.
I shook my head and smiled weakly. “You look really hungry, though,” I told him.
He laughed and nodded. “I told you, I am,” he replied and continued eating.
I just shook my head and continued eating, trying to put all the other doubts in the back of my head. I sighed. I looked at Juneau and bit my lip. “Can I ask a question?”
He looked at me and grinned. “You already are,” he replied.
I sighed and bit my lip once more. “What are you going to do when you love someone but everything is not in the right place?”
He looked at me, trying to read what I have in mind. His eyes are narrowed at me as he wiped his lips with a napkin. “I’d do what I think is the best for the person I love, of course. Nothing could ever matter more than doing what’s best for the one I love.”
