The Heiress Strikes Back

Chapter 44

Ch. 44 / 60 Jun 16, 2025

The Blood-Stained Path

Demitri’s car screeched to a halt in the driveway, his heart pounding with an adrenaline-fueled urgency.

The moment he stepped out of the vehicle, his gaze locked onto the trail of blood that stained the ground, leading into the house.

Without hesitation, he pulled out his licensed gun, his fingers steady despite the chaos churning inside him.

He sprinted toward the entrance, every step heavier than the last, every muscle in his body screaming to protect the two women who meant the world to him.

He kicked open the door and froze.

The house was eerily silent. Too silent. His breath hitched as he scanned the room, desperate for a sign that they were still there.

But there was nothing. The room was empty. His heart leaped into his throat, a cold sweat breaking out over his skin.

“No…” Demitri muttered under his breath, his voice barely a whisper. He rushed through every room, but it was clear: Ashley and Irene were gone. His heart hammered in his chest, the blood in his veins running cold.

The police officers who had been stationed here were dead. They had been executed, their lifeless bodies lying in pools of blood.

He ran back outside, his mind racing with fear and rage. He jumped into his car, slamming the door shut as he sped away.

The tires screeched as he navigated the streets, determination fueling his every move. Within minutes, he was pulling up in front of the gates of the Donaldson estate.

The guards barely had time to react before Demitri barked, “Call Mrs. Donaldson. Tell her it’s about her daughter, Emerald.”

The guards scrambled, and within moments, the door of the mansion opened, and a frantic woman appeared in a night robe.

Her hair was disheveled, her face etched with confusion and fear.

“Where is my daughter?” she demanded, her voice shaking.

The panic in her voice was unmistakable, but Demitri’s blood ran cold as he watched her face twist in terror. Before he could answer, she lunged at him, grabbing his shirt in desperation.

“I got home to find the absence of my mother and Ashley. Two police officers were guarding them, but they were killed.”

“What do you mean? Where the hell is my daughter?” she shrieked, shaking him violently.

Demitri’s mind was spinning, trying to piece together the puzzle. He didn’t have answers yet, but the sight of her distress hit him like a physical blow.

He opened his mouth to speak, to reassure her that they were going to find Ashley and Irene, but before he could get a word out, the sound of a rifle being cocked echoed through the night.

The woman’s voice wavered with panic. “Harold! Harold, do something!”

The moment she shouted, the door behind her flung open, and a tall figure emerged, holding a rifle.

It was Harold Donaldson, his face contorted with fury. His eyes locked on Demitri, his finger tightening on the trigger.

“Tell me where you kept Emerald, or I’ll blow your brain out,” Harold snarled, his voice thick with venom.

Demitri’s eyes widened, his instincts kicking in as he took a step back.

“I don’t know where she is,” Demitri said, his voice calm despite the tension in the air. “I’m here to find her, just like you.” He kept his eyes on Harold, trying to gauge his next move. But before he could say more, a shot rang out.

The sound of the rifle shot echoed like thunder in the quiet night, and Demitri jerked backward in fright. His heart slammed against his ribcage as his mind raced to comprehend what had just happened. The bullet had missed him by mere inches, the force of the shot sending a shockwave of terror through his body.

Harold’s voice was low and deadly. “I warned you.”

Demitri didn’t dare take his eyes off the rifle. Every muscle in his body screamed for him to react, to defend himself, but he knew any wrong move could be his last.

The cold barrel of the rifle was aimed directly at him, and he could feel the heat of the anger radiating off Harold’s body.

“Harold, stop!” she cried, her voice breaking with fear. “Please, we need to figure this out. Don’t do anything stupid.”

But Harold didn’t seem to be listening. He was focused solely on Demitri, the rifle steady in his hands.

Demitri’s eyes narrowed as he took in the situation. He could see the tension in Harold’s posture, the way his finger twitched on the trigger. Harold wasn’t just angry—he was desperate.

“I don’t know where she is,” Demitri repeated, his voice louder this time. “But I’m not the enemy. I’m trying to help you. You need to calm down and think. We need to work together to find Ashley and Irene.”

Harold didn’t respond, his expression unreadable, his finger still on the trigger. Demitri could feel the air thick with hostility, the weight of the rifle between them like a ticking time bomb.

Just then, the distant wail of sirens grew louder, signaling the arrival of reinforcements. Demitri knew he didn’t have much time.

“I’m not leaving until we find them,” he said, his voice firm. “But I need you to trust me. The clock is ticking.”

Harold’s eyes flickered, uncertainty passing through them for the briefest moment.

Demitri took a step back, his hands raised in the air.

Tell me where she is,” Harold demanded again.

Harold pulled the trigger when Demitri wouldn't say a word and Demitri jerked backward again in fright.
