The Heiress Strikes Back

Chapter 51

Ch. 51 / 60 Jun 16, 2025

Shattered Trust

Ashley sat in the dimly lit living room, staring at nothing in particular.

The sound of the clock ticking on the wall was the only noise accompanying her as she remained cocooned in silence.

She had been discharged from the hospital three days ago, but the physical freedom didn’t translate to emotional relief. The walls of her home felt like a prison.

Her mother’s voice broke the stillness. “Emerald, sweetheart, you need to eat something. You can’t go on like this.”

Ashley didn’t respond. She sat cross-legged on the couch, her hands resting protectively over her stomach.

Her mother sighed deeply and sat beside her, her tone softer now. “You’re hurting yourself and the baby. Please, just talk to me. Let it out.”

Still, there was no answer.

Trying again, her mother forced a weak smile. “You know, maybe Demitri just had to go on a trip. Irene hasn’t seen him either. It could be business—something urgent. He’ll come back.”

At the mention of his name, Ashley’s hands tightened against her stomach. The mere thought of Demitri sent a wave of anger and sadness crashing through her. Her lips trembled, but she still refused to speak.

Seeing no change, her father entered the room, his expression one of frustration. “Emma, give her space. She clearly doesn’t want to talk,” he said, his tone clipped.

“She needs—”

“Leave her be,” he interrupted. Turning to Ashley, he added, “Though I will say this, Emerald. Maybe it’s time to accept that Demitri isn’t coming back. Maybe he finally gave up on you.”

Ashley’s head snapped up at his words, her wide eyes betraying her shock. “What?” she whispered, her voice barely audible.

Her father crossed his arms. “I overheard him talking to Elena before he disappeared. They seemed... close. Maybe he realized you weren’t worth the fight anymore.”

“Enough!” her mother shouted, glaring at him. “You’re making it worse!”

But her father didn’t stop. “She needs to hear it. Demitri’s a fool if he’s gone back to that woman, but Emerald can’t live in denial.”

Ashley’s chest heaved as tears brimmed in her eyes. “He wouldn’t... not again,” she murmured, shaking her head.

Her father softened slightly but didn’t back down. “Are you so sure? He’s done it before. What makes you think he wouldn’t do it again?”

“I trusted him,” Ashley whispered, her voice cracking. “I trusted him with everything. I’m carrying his child. He promised me. He said he loved me.”

Her mother reached out to comfort her, but Ashley stood abruptly, the tears now streaming down her face. “Please, just leave me alone. Both of you.”

“Emerald, please—” her mother tried again, but Ashley cut her off.

“Leave!”

Her parents exchanged a worried glance but did as she asked. Once they were gone, Ashley sank to the floor, burying her face in her hands.

The sobs came quickly, shaking her entire body. She felt betrayed, shattered, and utterly lost.

Her mind raced with questions. Had Demitri lied to her? Has everything been a facade? And if he had truly left, why now, when she needed him the most?

She thought of their last moments together, the way he had held her hand and promised her they would face the future together. Had it all been a lie?

Hours passed as she cried herself into exhaustion. When sleep finally claimed her, it was restless, filled with haunting images of Demitri walking away from her, hand-in-hand with Elena.

The loud banging on her door startled her awake. Disoriented, she sat up, her heart pounding.

“Emerald!” her mother’s voice called from the other side. “Emerald, open the door!”

Before she could respond, the door burst open, and her mother rushed in, her face alight with excitement. “Emerald! Demitri is here!”

Ashley froze.

Her mother, oblivious to her turmoil, repeated herself, now practically giddy. “Did you hear me? Demitri is here! He’s asking for you!”

Ashley forced herself to remain calm. She didn’t flinch, didn’t move. Instead, she turned her head away, staring at the wall as if she hadn’t heard a word.

Her mother moved closer, placing a gentle hand on her shoulder. “Emerald, aren’t you going to see him? He’s here, darling! After everything, he’s here!”

Ashley’s lips pressed into a thin line. She refused to let the cracks show. Finally, she spoke, her voice cold and devoid of emotion. “I don’t want to see him.”

Her mother blinked, taken aback. “What? Emerald, don’t be like this. He’s come back for you! For the baby!”

Ashley stood slowly, her movements deliberate. She turned to face her mother, her eyes blazing with suppressed emotion. “Tell him to leave,” she said firmly. “Tell him to get lost. I don’t want to see him.”

“Ashley, please!” her mother pleaded. “You don’t mean that!”

“I do,” Ashley said, her voice unwavering. “If he cared, he wouldn’t have disappeared. If he cared, he wouldn’t have left me to wonder if he even loved me at all.”

Her mother’s mouth opened to argue, but Ashley cut her off. “I said I don’t want to see him. If you won’t tell him to leave, I will.”

Her mother hesitated, torn between her daughter’s pain and her own belief in Demitri’s intentions. Finally, she sighed and left the room, leaving Ashley alone once more.

Ashley sank back onto the couch, her hands trembling. She wasn’t sure if she had the strength to face Demitri. Not now. Not after everything.

And so, she sat there, staring at the door, waiting to see if he would defy her wishes. If he truly cared, he wouldn’t leave so easily this time.

Would he?
